Roundup Time

Roundup Time

Arabs, Arab Revolt, Arab Spring, Turkey, Iran, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Phoenicia, Berbers, Stampede, Cows, Cattle, roundup : Dry Bones cartoon. The Arabs have never been able to establish a coherent civilization uniting the lands of the Syrians, Phoenicians, Iraqis, Egyptians, Berbers, and the other nations and peoples across the Middle East that they conquered. The Ottoman Turks and the Persian Iranians are, however a different story.
The Arabs are now in turmoil and disarray ...and the Turks and Persians are moving to grab and control the pieces.

Awful Superhero Halloween Costumes I’d Love To See – Zebra Batman
Posted: 20 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT
Yep, Zebra Batman:
zebra batman
Apparently:
Batman and Robin encounter a magnetically-powered villain, the Zebra-Man. But a charge from the machine which gave Zebra-Man his powers turns Batman into a "Zebra-Batman" who repels all solid matter, and cannot regulate his powers.
Yeah.
Anyway, someone needs to make this costume for real!

the China Israel Connection

the China Israel Connection

China, Israel, Asia, Civilization, : Dry Bones cartoon.
The modern State of Israel and the modern state of China were created within 15 months of each other in the 1948-49 period. But both Chinese and Israelite history go back through thousands of years before 1948-49, each in our own homeland. The first-ever Israel Studies Program in the history of Chinese universities is about to celebrate the inauguration of its first Academic year. The program was created and established by SIGNAL (Sino-Israel Global Network & Academic Leadership) at the International Relations School at Sichuan International Studies University(SISU) in association with the Center for Jewish & Chinese Studies (CJCS) based at SISU.
I'm proud to have been asked by SIGNAL to be the keynote speaker at the inaugural event at SISU. I am also pleased that SIGNAL has invited me to lecture at universities and think tanks across China throughout the second half of October. If all goes right, as you read this, I'll be heading east to Shanghai, Beijing, Henan and Chongqing.
I expect to be back in Israel on Nov. 1st.

I left some cartoons to automatically post while I'm away. Enjoy

Halloween Cartoons – Monsters
Posted: 25 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT
Recently I've been blogging about varieties of Halloween cartoons. First it was pumpkins, then witches, but this time I'm taking more of a potpourri approach and chatting about monsters in general.

Halloween gives a cartoonist plenty to play with, but I'll start with one of my favorites - vampires.

Halloween Cartoon #5332 by Andertoons
Sexy young vampires may be very much in fashion, but for my money the good old fashioned widow-peaked, tuxedo wearing blood sucker is still the best. Give me Count Chocula or The Count from Sesame Street over that boring Edward any day!

Anyway, as far as the above comic, I'm not sure exactly how or if blood as a diet would affect one's blood pressure, if a vampire did indeed even have blood pressure. But, as I've said before, cartoons, perhaps especially Halloween cartoons, are often better if not examined too too closely.

Halloween Cartoon #4304 by Andertoons
Ok, another vampire one, and sort of a wordy one at that for one without a caption per se.
For this one I had to actually go out to my car and take a picture of my side view mirror so I could get it to look right. What I won't do for my art!

Halloween Cartoon #5834 by Andertoons
So this is what being a cartoonist's wife is

like. You get to hear this at dinner - "OK,

so this wolf man is giving a

presentation..." and you have to

listen, take it in stride, and offer your

point of view. So, before you marry a

cartoonist, be sure you're ready for that.

Halloween Cartoon #6140 by Andertoons
Few things are funnier to me than Phil Hartman's

"FIRE  BAD!" Frankenstein from SNL. Honestly, just

thinking about it is making me giggle as I write this.

I knew that I wanted to play with that classic phrase,

but  it took a great deal of staring off in space to

transplant it from a dark castle or angry village to the

boardroom.

This is also one of the few Halloween cartoons of mine

that I look at and think that I pretty much got it perfect.

I'd like to think Phil Hartman would have enjoyed it too.

Well, that's it for monsters. Feel free to check out all of

my Halloween cartoons, and be sure you give out good

candy this year. Not raisins. Don't be that guy.

BTW, don't miss my other Halloween cartoon blog posts about pumpkins and witches!

About Animated TV: Top 20 Guest Stars on The Simpsons, X-Men

Top 20 Guest Stars on The Simpsons
Springfield is a welcoming place for guest stars. Over the past two decades, actors, rock stars and celebrities of all types have been guest stars on The Simpsons, some with only cameo appearances and others with recurring characters. Browse my list of top 20 guest stars on The Simpsons to see if you agree.

X-Men Series on G4
This past summer, G4 and Marvel teamed up to bring legions of fans their favorite Super Heroes with the original Marvel anime series, Iron Man and Wolverine. Now, Marvel's most popular team of mutants (sort of) tears up the small screen on G4. Read my review of the new original anime series X-Men.

Premiere: Allen Gregory
Allen Gregory will piggy-back onto Fox's popular Animation Domination, including the new Treehouse of Horror from The Simpsons, on Sunday night. However, I hope this cartoon has a short, short life. Read my review to find out why.

Premiere: Good Vibes
On the other hand, a new cartoon premiered last night on MTV, piggy-backing onto the return of Beavis and Butt-head. Good Vibes is the *opposite* of Allen Gregory. Read my review to find out more.

Awful Superhero Halloween Costumes I’d Love To See – Invisible Woman
Posted: 27 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT
I remembered this costume well from my youth. See if you can tell why:
invisible woman slutty costume 1
It took me a bit to find some decent pics of what apparently is referred to by fanboys as Invisible Woman's "Slut Uniform," but find them I did.
I think the best part of the new costume's (ahem) reveal is Reed's totally blase take:
invisible woman slutty costume 2
It's nice?! It's NICE?! THE ROOF?!?! Reed, honey, step away from the computer.
Anyway, I dunno how feasible this would be to make, but someone needs to make this happen. PRONTO!
OK, one more shot just for old time's sake:

BTW, don't miss Zebra Batman, Bug Catcher Spidey or Underwater Wonder Woman!

DRY BONES COMIC STRIP

Sukkot (2004)

Sukkot, Holidays, Jewish Culture, tabernacles September 20, 2004 (2004) Dry Bones cartoon: Yom Kippur, Fasting, Holidays, Jewish Culture, Shuldig, Today's Golden Oldie was published in 2004 ...but it was a rerun ...another one of the very few cartoons that I repeated a cartoon. So 2004 was the second time that I ran the cartoon, but I just can't find the original. 2004 was before I had the blog, which, for me, defines it as a "golden oldie". So here's one of my favorite cartoons! Again!Tomorrow is Erev Sukkot, the eve of this week-long holiday. To browse my previous postings about Sukkot just click on the word Sukkot.

Awful Superhero Halloween Costumes I’d Love To See – Underwater Wonder Woman
Posted: 06 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT
What with all of the superhero flicks this past summer, there's no shortage of comic book costumes for Halloween this year. But as omnipresent as they are, there's still a few I'd like to see. I mean, heck if they made actual costumes from those DC Anime statuettes last year, maybe I got a chance!
So every Thursday this month I'm going to be suggesting some less inspired costumes of years past that I'd LOVE to see at my door asking for candy.
First up, Underwater Wonder Woman from the CBS series episode "The Bermuda Triangle Crisis":
wonder woman water
Even all covered up, WW's still got it.
Now, technically, unlike upcoming costumes, this is an actual real-life costume, but I want to see this mass-produced and for sale at my local Target!

George Jetson

The JetsonsPricegrabber.com
The Flinstones took the all-American family back in time, but The Jetsons took it to the future. George Jetson was like Fred Flinstone and every other sitcom father we've seen. He worked to take care of his family, and only wanted some peace and quiet from time to time. But his kids, wife, dog and boss kept him from it. Famously being trapped on a treadmill (who hasn't been?) in the opening credits, it's easy to remember George Jetson.

Betty Boop

Betty BoopPricegrabber.com
Betty Boop was a star in the 1930s, when talkies overtook silent films. Her black and white sex appeal, cutesy voice and ditzy charm made her a hit. Now her image is iconic, appearing on all kinds of merchandise people buy without ever really seeing even one cartoon.

Fat Albert

Fat Albert and the Cosby KidsPricegrabber.com
"Hey, hey, hey! It's Faaaaaaaat Albert!" Who doesn't know that quote, that theme? Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids was created, voiced and hosted by Bill Cosby. The Saturday morning cartoon spoke to kids of color, living in not-so-Bel Air conditions. Forgetting the 2004 live-action movie, the cartoon is a classic that taught lessons in a warm and funny way.
Beavis and Butt-head
Beavis and Butt-headPricegrabber.com
Mike Judge (King of the Hill) brought us these stuttering slacker teenage boys on MTV. They worked at a fast food restaurant, went to school, watched videos and drove adults mad. Beavis and Butt-head were even popular enough to spawn a feature film titled Beavis and Butt-head Do America. Late at night, I can still hear them chuckling.

Mr. Magoo

Mr. MagooUPA Productions of America, Inc.
Blind, adventurous and oblivious are not a safe mix for an old dude, but Mr. Magoo makes it work. Time after again he misses the bullet, so to speak, and we laugh all the way.

Scooby-Doo and Shaggy

Scooby DooTurner Broadcasting
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy are inseparable, in their antics and on this list. They're funny on two levels. The first is that, seen through the eyes of a child, they're just silly cowards who somehow always save the day and remain best friends. But watch Scooby-Doo as an adult, and you'll wonder if the van driving, spacey talk and continual snacking are lifestyle symptoms of the same folks who inspired Pineapple Express.

Porky Pig

Porky PigPricegrabber.com
Porky Pig has been stuttering, "That's all folks!" for the better part of a century, but my 6-year old son laughs as if he's the first to discover him. That's the appeal of the sweet little swine.

Daffy Duck

Daffy DuckTurner Broadcasting
Daffy Duck is to Bugs Bunny as Wile E. Coyote is to the Road Runner. Does Daffy envy Bugs? Is jealousy at the heart of his bitter attitude toward Bugs? Regardless, his tantrums and schemes make for great cartoons.

Eric Cartman

Eric CartmanComedy Central
Eric Cartman is usually the villain on South Park. His unemotional, pragmatic view toward his achieving his goals has resulted in many dire circumstances, as well as catch phrases.

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePantsNickelodeon
Though several channels exist that provide entertainment made for the Y-rating crowd, one cartoon has endured for almost a decade, becoming more famous than its Nickelodeon fellows: SpongeBob SquarePants. Pineapples, snails and fast food were never so funny.
